Brachina Gorge Road is a 30 km unsealed track winding through the heart of South Australia's Flinders Ranges. Connecting the Outback Highway near Parachilna to Bunyeroo Road closer to Wilpena Pound, this route is a must-do for adventure riders exploring the Flinders Ranges and Outback region.
The road takes you through the spectacular Brachina Gorge Geological Trail, showcasing rock formations dating back over 600 million years. The scenery is nothing short of epic—towering cliffs, layered rock strata, and riverbeds lined with native red gums. Keep an eye out for yellow-footed rock wallabies, often seen sunning themselves on the rocks.
Although the road is unsealed, it's typically well-maintained and suitable for adventure motorcycles in dry conditions. After rain, the track can become slippery and impassable, particularly at creek crossings and washouts. Expect loose gravel, rocky sections, and occasional corrugations. It's best ridden with an off-road capable bike and some experience on uneven terrain.
The route is not just about riding—it’s about immersion in one of Australia’s most geologically and culturally rich landscapes. Several interpretive signs along the way explain the ancient rock layers and the formation of the Flinders Ranges, making it a fascinating stop-and-learn experience.
Brachina Gorge Road is ideal for a larger Flinders Ranges loop, connecting to Bunyeroo Gorge, Wilpena Pound, and beyond. It’s a road that blends adventure with awe—incredible riding paired with landscapes that speak to the deep time of the Australian continent.
