Nowendoc Road is a scenic and partly unsealed backcountry route in the New England region of New South Wales, linking the towns of Walcha and Nowendoc. Covering approximately 70 km, the road delivers a brilliant mix of open sweepers, gravel sections, and high-country views—ideal for adventure riders looking to escape the bitumen without venturing too far off the grid.

The ride begins in Walcha, a known gateway to motorcycle touring, and heads south through undulating farmland and forest. The first half is sealed and provides flowing curves through open pastureland. As the road progresses, it transitions to well-maintained gravel, climbing into more remote terrain with views across valleys and ridgelines.

The gravel section can vary with weather—generally hard-packed and manageable, but it can become slippery after rain. Adventure bikes are ideal, though dual-sport and experienced riders on larger tourers will still enjoy the run. Expect little traffic, with the occasional 4WD or local farm vehicle.

Nowendoc Road is often used as a linking route between Thunderbolts Way and the backroads heading toward Gloucester or Tamworth. It also provides access to quiet campsites and trail junctions in the surrounding national parks.

This road is a true high-country gem—less travelled, scenic, and offering just enough off-pavement challenge to keep things interesting. Whether you're passing through or building it into a New England loop, Nowendoc Road is well worth the detour.
