Planning a Ride - Geelong to Adelaide to Darwin (and then back again)...

Hi,

I'm looking for some basic advice from anyone who has done the above.

I'm planning on doing this trip March/April/May 2026, and I'm giving myself 30 days to do it. I've broken the journey into ten roughly 500km legs, with each one ending at accomodation of some sort (roadhouse, generally). This trip will be on the black-top; I'm not planning on going off-road or to involve any wild camping (though I am thinking about taking a sleeping bag and tarp in case I need them).

My main question is: how much notice do the roadhouses need for booking? Is the day before enough? (I'm not sticking to a strict schedule, so won't necessarily be riding everyday).

Hey mate, 10 x 500kms sounds like a good approach. Long days but a bunch of rest days in the mix is a good idea.

Personally, I would book early and then update if things change, but that's me. I think most of the time the roadhouses would be fine but there's always the chance that a large group would come through and book the place out. Although, probably unlikely so having an option to park up somewhere with a tent is a good backup. May is starting to get cold at night though.
