Planning a Ride - Geelong to Adelaide to Darwin (and then back again)...

Hi,

I'm looking for some basic advice from anyone who has done the above.

I'm planning on doing this trip March/April/May 2026, and I'm giving myself 30 days to do it. I've broken the journey into ten roughly 500km legs, with each one ending at accomodation of some sort (roadhouse, generally). This trip will be on the black-top; I'm not planning on going off-road or to involve any wild camping (though I am thinking about taking a sleeping bag and tarp in case I need them).

My main question is: how much notice do the roadhouses need for booking? Is the day before enough? (I'm not sticking to a strict schedule, so won't necessarily be riding everyday).

Hi - If you're not fussy, and have a backup just in case (tent), you should be fine.

We travelled from Melbourne to Adelaide on 2 and 3 January, and from Adelaide to Darwin from 30 January to 4 February this year to bring our new(to us) bikes home - it was not peak tourist season and managed to find a suitable bed by phoning ahead the same day when we knew how we were feeling and the weather .. that gave us the flexibility to pull up earlier and swim/aircon or push thru another 100km if we needed (44 degree days....) Note that April/May in the "Top End" marks the start of the tourist/Grey (and not grey) Nomad season. Depending on the season, you will most likely still want air conditioning due to the humidity, which lasts through to early May.

Flexibility is key, and you will likely experience all seasons and humidity levels!

Enjoy!
