Tumut Ponds Dam is one of those places where adventure riding and Australian engineering history collide beautifully. Tucked deep in the mountains along an already spectacular road, the dam forms part of the massive Snowy Hydro Scheme — and standing there, it’s hard not to wonder how on earth workers managed to haul equipment, concrete, and 1940s trucks into this terrain through freezing alpine winters.
The ride in is outstanding: winding mountain roads, steep valleys, river crossings, and dense forest the whole way. It’s a brilliant stop for riders exploring the western side of Kosciuszko National Park, adding a real sense of history and scale to the journey.
