The Firs Picnic Area is one of the most atmospheric spots in the Bulga State Forest near Wauchope. Originally planted in the 1920s as an experimental plot, these towering Douglas firs now form a dark, cool, almost cathedral-like tunnel — completely different to the eucalyptus country you ride through to get there.

Adventure riders love it because the approach winds through proper Mid North Coast forest roads, mixing dirt, elevation, and that remote “am I still in Australia?” feel when the pine canopy suddenly closes in. It’s a peaceful spot to stop, take photos, and enjoy the contrast before heading deeper into the ranges around Mount Seaview or down toward Wauchope.
