The Snowy River Rail Bridge near Orbost is a standout piece of engineering history — once the longest timber rail bridge in Victoria, built in 1916 to carry trains across the wide, flood-prone Snowy River flats. Today, it’s a peaceful yet slightly haunting landmark, with its long timber spans spanning the river and wetlands.

For riders, it’s an easy and worthwhile detour when passing through Orbost or heading toward Marlo. It offers a chance to pause, take in the scale of the river, and reflect on the region’s logging and railway past before continuing deeper into East Gippsland or along the coast.
