This is a Dalgety Loop Day along the Barry Way, over Mackillop's Bridge, up the Bonong Road, calling through Bendoc (worth a stop at the pub) into Delegate (for fuel at 239km mark) through Bombala (preferred fuel stop) and back into Dalgety. Dalgety's a small town, on the banks of the Snowy River located at what was once an important river crossing along the Stock route from Gippsland to the Snowy Mountains High Country dating from the 1840s. The first settlement was originally known as Buckley's Crossing after Edward Buckley who established a farm near the river crossing in 1832. In 1874 the town was formally surveyed & named Dalgety. At the time of the survey the population was 23 & a punt was operating across the river. The first bridge was constructed in 1888. Head West out of Dalgety & meet the Barry Way turning left and heading South. It's sealed initially, becoming unsealed at Ingebirah Gap, remaining so to the Victorian border. At the 116km mark head NE towards Little River Falls and then steadily swing towards the East & Mackillop's Bridge over the Snowy River (worth stopping for a photo or two). From there press on picking up the Deddick River on your right. At 196km turn right onto the Bonong Road. At about 224km arrive in Bendoc. Not much here other than the pub (worth a stop). At 236km you hit Delegate & can grab some fuel here if needed. Keep on punching through to Bombala and then track West back into Dalgety.
